Cleaners and security guards have asked for MOP30 (US$3.75) an hour in negotiations about setting a minimum wage for some of Macau’s lowest-paid workers, our sister publication Business Daily reports.

Two meetings held by the government have been told that employers want a rate of MOP26 an hour.

The government has set a range of MOP23 to MOP30.

Labour representatives say their figure allows for the effects of inflation and the time it will take for the government to institute the minimum wage.

Some cleaning company managers say the higher rate could cause a “panic wave of rises in building management fees”.
