The government intends to impose a minimum wage within three years, Secretary of the Economy and Finance Lionel Leong Vai Tac has said.

Mr Leong said after a meeting of the Standing Committee for the Coordination of Social Affairs that representatives of employers and employees alike agreed with the government’s intention.

The Legislative Assembly is still debating a bill that would entitle cleaning and security staff to a minimum wage.

“We will study whether we should implement a minimum wage for all other sectors gradually, or all at one time,” Mr Leong said.
