Spending by tourists reached MOP13.9 billion (US$1.74 billion) in the second quarter, an increase of 23 percent compared to the second quarter of last year, according to the Statistics and Census Service.

Yesterday’s Visitor Expenditure Survey for the second quarter found overnight visitors spent MOP11.7 billion, about five times the MOP2.2 billion spent by day trippers.

Each tourist staying overnight spent an average of MOP3,396, up by 17 percent in year-on-year terms. Each same-day tourist spent about 3 percent more last quarter.

Tourists spent 49 percent of their budgets on shopping, about one-quarter on accommodation and 19 percent on food and beverages.

The data excludes gaming expenses.
