Survey Q1: Wages increase in all sectors

The ‘Survey on Manpower Needs and Wages’ for the first quarter of 2013, released yesterday by the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), indicates that the manufacturing sector had a 2.5% decrease year-on-year, with only 11,193 people employed. The categories “manufacture of wearing apparel” and “manufacture of food products” employed 3,400 and 3,541 people respectively. Average earnings, excluding bonuses and allowances, of full-time employees in the manufacturing sector for March 2013 rose by 7.5% year-on-year to MOP7,890.
The hotel and restaurant sector accounted for 69,619 people up by 9.0% year-on-year. The hotel sector alone increased by 9.3% year-on-year, providing jobs to 45,599. Average earnings for full-time employees in March 2013 in this sector rose by 7.9% year-on-year to MOP12,050. Waiters/waitresses in hotels earned MOP8,500 and housekeeping staff earned MOP7,830. Waiters/waitresses in restaurants earned an average of MOP6,940.
The survey stated that electricity, gas and water supply employed 1,085 people, an increase of 2.2% year-on-year. Average earnings of full-time employees in March rose by 7.3% year-on-year to MOP24,530. The insurance sector employed 472 people, up by 3.1% year-on-year. Average earnings of full-time employees for March rose by 5.4% to MOP21,560. Financial intermediation activities provided work for 388 people. This was a significant drop of 13% year-on-year. However, the average earnings of full-time employees engaged in this profession increased 3.9% year-on-year to MOP13,250. Child-care employed 843 people and elderly care provided jobs for 614. The average earnings of full-time employees for March amounted to MOP10,280 and MOP9,900 respectively.
Regarding job vacancies, the survey concluded that restaurants reported 2,107 vacancies at the end of the first quarter of 2013, down by 37.3% from a year earlier. Meanwhile hotels had 2,086 vacancies and manufacturing offered 1,260 vacancies.
For recruitment, 92.9% of the vacant positions in insurance required work experience. 77.2% of the vacancies in restaurants required junior secondary education or lower, while 85.7% of those in insurance required tertiary education.
Besides Cantonese, all vacant positions in financial intermediation required knowledge of Mandarin, while 78.6% of these vacancies also required English. Meanwhile, 80.9% and 61.1% of the vacant positions in hotels required knowledge of Mandarin and English respectively.
Restaurants had the highest employee turnover rate at 6.9%, and employee recruitment rate at 7.6%. However, the vacancy rate still stood at 9.5%, the second highest vacancy level after manufacturing, 11%, indicating that most of the vacancies are not filled and employee turnover is prevalent.
