A new exclusive lane for e-channel users opened for use in the Gongbei checkpoint in Zhuhai last weekend.
The new lane is directly connected to the newly expanded east wing of the immigration building. The new lane is two meters wide and 150 meters long. 23 automated passenger clearance systems, commonly known as e-channels, have been set up at the end of the new walkway.
Yesterday MDT went on site and visited the new channel, which is separated from the lane linking to the main immigration hall, where traditional counters for people without an e-channel registration, who are mostly tourists, are located.
The two lanes are separated by barriers and railings. Instruction signs have been set up by authorities at the entrances of the lane, as well as having two policemen there to provide assistance when needed. A sign reads that opening hours are from 8 a.m. to 12 a.m.
It took the Times about five minutes to pass the Zhuhai checkpoint. In the past, queuing in line at the square during peak hours could take nearly 30 minutes. Besides this, the 32 e-channels in the main square will remain open as an option for users.
A Gongbei official told local broadcaster TDM that the future opening hours of the new channel would hinge on the number of visitors the gates receive.
Before the new lane was set up, all people, including e-channel users (local residents, migrant workers, etc.) and visitors who needed to queue for a document check in the immigration hall, had to line up together outside the immigration building and could only go to separate lanes after entering the hall.
