Retail trade activity rose by 23 pct in 2013

The overall retail trade business rose by 23 percent year-on-year in 2013, reaching MOP66 billion. According to the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), sales within the watches and jewelry sector contributed greatly to the increase in retail trade business activity.
Sales of watches and jewelry reached over MOP20 billion, which represents 31 percent of overall business activity in the sector. Warehouse goods and trinkets yielded revenue of over MOP10 billion, representing 16 percent of the retail trade business.
In terms of trade volume, DSEC recorded an increase of 24 percent year-on-year in 2013. Communication goods (an increase of 49 percent), jewelry and watches (39 percent greater) and leather goods (27 percent greater) registered higher increases.
Retail trade sales in the fourth quarter of 2013 reached over MOP18 billion, rising by 14 percent when compared to the previous quarter. In terms of business activity during the fourth quarter, jewelry and watches represented 30 percent of the overall business, reaching MOP5.56 billion; this is followed by warehouse goods and trinkets (16 percent), leather goods (11 percent) and adult clothing (10 percent).
Retail trade sales during the fourth quarter of 2013 rose by 25 percent year-on-year. Sales of communication goods rose the most with a more 64 percent increase, followed by watches and jewelry (a 35 percent increase), food and Chinese pastry goods (a 29 percent increase), and warehouse goods and trinkets (a 27 percent increase).
