The number of package tourists is likely to fall in the short term as travel agents raise their prices to meet new legal requirements in the mainland, our sister publication Business Daily reports.

China Travel Service (Macau) Ltd deputy general manager Huang Canhui said prices would have to increase by an average of 50 percent.

From next month, free or excessively cheap tours are banned. Travel agencies have previously arranged low-cost tours that were subsidised by hidden costs and commissions from retailers.

Mr Huang said higher prices would “definitely” reduce the number of package tourists in the short term.
