The Director of the Central Government Liaison Office in Macau, Mr Li Gang, revealed on the sidelines of two sessions of the 12th NPC and CPPCC in Beijing that the Macau government is preparing “diversified economic projects” in Cuiheng village in Zhongshan city by either renting or purchasing land there.
Situated southeast of downtown Zhongshan city, a neighboring town to Zhuhai, Cuiheng is 26km north of Macau. The village is best known as the birthplace of Sun Yat-sen, the “Father of the Nation” of the Republic of China.
Cuiheng was declared as a “strategic platform” during a joint meeting between Guangdong and Macau last year. The area will take the model of Hengqin as a reference and part of it will be set up as demonstration zone for the Macau-Zhongshan cooperation. Also, last year Cuiheng authorities disclosed the intention of working with the MSAR on the yachting industry.
The Macau government is also discussing land development issues with Nansha new district, according to Li.
Mentioning that there are limited plots of land that can be developed in Hengqin, Mr Li said the idea of building public housing units in Hengqin Island for Macau residents is not part of the Guangdong-Macau cooperation. “Macau residents wouldn’t want to live in Hengqin. Only if they were forced to do it. Livelihood problems should be top priority; I personally think that the MSAR’s public housing issues should be firstly solved in Macau”, he stated.
“The biggest challenges to Macau are land and talents. If these two problems can be solved, Macau can enjoy prosperity and stability for generations to come,” Li Gang added.
As for the city’s capability to receive visitors, Li said: “There are 150,000 guest rooms in Las Vegas, while Macau only has less than 30,000 rooms. The number of visitors in Las Vegas is eight million more than that we have in Macau, but their number of guestrooms is eight times more than ours. Visitors should be guaranteed with quality services concerning accommodation, dining and trips when they come to Macau, so we have to consider the capacity we can afford.”
In addition, the Liaison Office Head claimed that he wants the new Chief Executive to be elected in a just and fair manner. He also suggested that anybody who is qualified could take part in the election. “Chui Sai On has declared that he will seek re-election. Nevertheless, anyone who meets the criteria can also declare their interest to participate in the election. We as the Liaison Office of the Central Government want the SAR government to follow the regulations on the CE election to elect the new CE in a fair, just and legal way”.
