The Chief of the Office of Secretary of Transport and Public Works, Wong Chan Tong, indicated that the government is aiming to commence the public consultation process for the Macau Property for Macau Residents (MPMR) policy next month. He said that officials are currently drafting consultation documents that are based on the reports published by the University of Macau and the Macau Polytechnic Institute.
The consultation will likely cover a series of issues relating to the policy, including its nature, the relationship between public and private housing, as well as the targeted beneficiaries of MPMR. Wong hopes that the government can roll out the consultation next month. Moreover, the Chief of Office revealed that there are currently around 210,000 residential units housing 185,200 families. About 36 percent of these households have benefited from public housing or non-material subsidies from the government. He claimed that the government sets a priority on the housing problem.
The Head of the Central Liaison Office, Li Gang, previously suggested that the MSAR government should solve the city’s housing problem with resources within its own territory. The Secretary for Finance and Economy, Francis Tam, also said that the collaborative projects with the Guangdong government that involve land in Zhongshan and Nansha will focus on economic outcomes. Thus, MPMR has become one of the very few options the administration has to tackle the high housing prices.
