Minimum wage bill progresses to next stage

The Legislative Assembly has passed unanimously on first reading the bill setting the minimum wage for cleaners and security staff at MOP30 (US$3.80) an hour or MOP240 a day, excluding overtime pay or bonuses.

The bill will now move on to the committee stage.

Secretary for the Economy and Finance Francis Tam told the assembly that the legislation was the first step toward a universal minimum wage, but did not say when the government would institute a universal minimum wage.
