The central government should allow gaming in the mainland because Macau has insufficient capacity to meet Chinese demand for it, an academic study concludes.
The report on the study, by Li Sheng of the Macau Polytechnic Institute and Weibing Zhao of the Institute for Tourism Studies, says Chinese will gamble their money away in other countries if gaming remains illegal in the mainland.
The results of their research indicate that Chinese gamble roughly RMB1 trillion (about US$161 billion) a year, but that Macau took only about MOP352 billion (about US$44 billion) in bets last year.
