Macau is stretching the limit on the number of tourists it can cope with, the findings of a study by the Institute for Tourism Studies suggest.
The institute’s Study on Tourism Carrying Capacity of Macau 2013 and 2014 found that residents and tourists surveyed in 2013 perceived the optimum average number of visitors to be between 87,573 and 94,956 per day.
Last year they felt the range was 89,374 to 92,325 visitors per day.
“This is probably due to residents beginning to grow weary of the effects of continuous tourism growth on important quality-of-life issues, such as deteriorating experiences of public transport and perceived crowding in the streets, as well as deterioration of the travel experiences of visitors caused by overcrowding and perhaps a decline in the quality of service to tourists,” the study report says.
