Loans rise faster than deposits in Nov

The currency in circulation grew 1.5 percent in November, whilst total loans increased faster than total deposits. The overall loan-to-deposit ratio of the banking sector also grew from the previous month, said the Monetary Authority of Macao yesterday. Total deposits in the banking sector rose by 1 percent from the previous month to MOP678.1 billion in November. Amongst these, resident deposits were virtually unchanged from the preceding month, staying at MOP436.9 billion while non-resident deposits grew by 2.7 percent to MOP173.3 billion. Moreover, public sector deposits with the banking sector increased by 2.9 percent to MOP67.9 billion. Meanwhile, domestic loans to the private sector increased by 2.1 percent from a month ago to MOP254.8 billion, whilst external loans increased 5.3 percent to MOP278.8 billion. Accordingly, the loan-to-deposit ratio for the resident sector at the end of November grew by 0.8 percentage points from the previous month to 50.5 percent. The ratio for both the resident and non-resident sectors also increased by 2.1 percentage points to 78.7 percent.
