Lawmakers’ monthly pay may exceed MOP50,000

According to the Legislative Assembly (AL)’s regulations, lawmakers’ incomes are measured against that of the Chief Executive of the MSAR. A lawmaker can receive more than MOP50,000 each month including the basic salary, a monthly allowance, as well as an “appearance fee” for attending AL meetings.
The Chinese newspaper Macau Daily News (Ou Mun Iat Po) reported that the salary of MSAR’s Chief Executive amounts to some MOP130,000 each month, which is taken as a reference point when deciding lawmakers’ salaries.
The salary of a lawmaker is made up of three different amounts: the basic income, an allowance and an income for attending committee meetings. The base pay, which is equal to 25 percent of CE’s salary, is approximately MOP32,000. Apart from this, each lawmaker receives some MOP20,000 as a monthly allowance. In addition, MOP800 per instance will be paid to lawmakers who attend meetings of standing committees.
The AL President and Vice President receive higher salaries. The former can earn MOP100,000 in the position, which is equal to 80 percent of the CE’s salary. A subsidy of more than MOP30,000 for “social events” is also granted to the President. The Vice President can earn MOP78,000 each month, 60 percent of the CE’s pay.
