SJM Holdings Ltd’s shortage of hotel accommodation is holding it back from attracting middle-class gamblers from the mainland and undermining its position as gaming market leader, our sister publication Business Daily reports.

“Because of the lack of hotel rooms… it is a little bit difficult for us to grow the mass market,” chief executive Ambrose So Shu Fai told reporters yesterday.

SJM Holdings is Macau’s biggest casino operator by revenue but its market share has slipped by 2 percentage points to 24 percent in the past year.

Mr So said the company was still looking for appropriate places to put its two slot machine parlours. The law says it must move them out of residential areas by November.
