Imports up 13 pct to MOP58.74 billion

External merchandise trade in the first three quarters of this year grew 12 percent year-on-year to MOP65.47 billion from MOP58.25 billion last year. The total value of merchandise imports in the first nine months also increased by 13 percent to MOP58.74 billion. Moreover, the total value of merchandise exports has risen 9 percent to MOP6.73 billion. The value of re-exports has grown 19 percent, while that of domestic exports has decreased by 14 percent. These factors have contributed to a trade deficit of MOP52.01 billion in the first three quarters of the year. Reviewing the figures of the third quarter this year, the total value of merchandise exports has fallen 3 percent to MOP2.14 billion, at odds with the total value of merchandise imports, which has grown 15 percent to MOP20.50 billion. The exports to Hong Kong and mainland China have increased by 14 and 24 percent respectively. Nevertheless, exports to the United States and the European Union have experienced drops of 30 and 15 percent respectively. In the first three quarters of 2013, merchandise imported from mainland China and the EU saw an increase of 13 and 11 percent respectively. Among all the goods, the importation of construction materials rose by 40 percent.
