A study conducted by a recruitment firm suggests that Macau firms are still seeking more local graduates, despite the current economic challenges.
And a human resource expert said that careers in the hotel and gaming industries still top the job preferences of recent graduates.
Macau’s casino revenue may have seen a decline over the last two years but hotel and gaming companies still remain the major area of interest for many young people seeking a professional career.
“Hotel is a major area of interest. There are some gaming majors, engineering, IT, marketing, and media,” said MSS Recruitment managing director Jiji Tu.
With entry-level job salaries typically ranging between 10,000 and 12,000 patacas, a human resource expert says that gaming companies still have the highest-paying careers in the city.
“According to our salary table, as well as a small survey we have done, I think the entry-level salary is somewhere between 10,000 to 12,000, some maybe higher, 13,000. Actually it depends on the major. For majors in high demand, the salary will be higher. Possibly, some of these positions are from the casinos. Or can be in engineering, the salary is quite high,” she added.
However, Tu said that, despite the large number of jobs available, many companies still prefer to hire people with the right career perspective and long-term goals.
“To be more stable, because the past few years, the economy was very good and there were many opportunities in the market so we see many fresh graduates they probably change jobs every few months if they’re not happy with the current job,” she warned.
“So they just think there are many opportunities and they just maybe want to try different ones. But from a recruiter or HR perspective, we look at the resumes, we look at the stability. Because the last thing we want is to hire someone who will leave after three months,” Tu advised.
She also suggests that jobseekers should be more realistic nowadays.
“In terms of salary expectations, I think now the economy is not very good. The companies are very conservative in terms of probably salary offerings so they should really focus on long-term career prospects,” the recruiter said.
MSS Recruitment will be holding its fifth Macau Campus Joint Recruitment Event, which offers a one-stop career portal for graduating students. This includes a wide variety of available career opportunities from over 63 employers from 13 industries.
