Hengqin Island will operate under new import, tax and immigration rules on August 1, our sister publication Business Daily reports.

The new rules are aimed at speeding up formalities at the border, and include tax benefits for some imports to Hengqin, the newspaper quotes the mainland’s General Administration of Customs and State Administration of Taxation as saying.

Machinery and equipment for use in Hengqin infrastructure and manufacturing are exempt, but consumer goods and construction materials are not.

Companies must pay import and sales tax on products sold in the mainland that are manufactured and processed on Hengqin.
