Guangdong wants free trade zone with HK, Macau

Guangdong provincial officials will ask the central government “immediately” for permission to create a free trade zone that includes Hong Kong and Macau, China Daily reports.

The newspaper says Hengqin Island, Guangzhou’s Nansha district, Shenzhen’s Qianhai economic zone and Guangzhou airport would also be included.

The zone could be set up next year.

The report quotes an official as saying research had been done into establishing a zone that would concentrate on finance, trade and services without customs getting in the way.

The biggest beneficiary could be Guangzhou international airport, the mainland’s third-busiest, the newspaper says.
