The government’s fiscal surplus in the first four months of this year was MOP20.89 billion (about US$2.61 billion), Financial Services Bureau data show.

The surplus was 54.8 per cent lower than the surplus in the corresponding period last year because the government took in less revenue and spent more.

The amount of taxes on gaming shrank as the gaming market slumped, reducing fiscal revenue by 33.6 per cent to MOP37.94 billion.

Government spending increased by 56.3 per cent to MOP17.05 billion.
