The government is proposing to increase severance pay for laid-off workers, so raising the limit on the amount employers are obliged to pay to MOP240,000 (US$30,000) from MOP168,000.

The Labour Affairs Bureau put the proposal to the Standing Committee for the Coordination of Social Affairs, which comprises officials and representatives of employers and workers.

“The government decided to increase the limit after discussing it with representatives of employer and employee organisations,” the bureau’s director, Wong Chi Hong, told reporters.

“We have also introduced a mechanism to update the limit every two years.”
