The government is open to the idea of continuing to permit smoking in casinos, an official has indicated.

Secretary of Social Affairs and Culture Alexis Tam Chon Weng, speaking after the Legislative Assembly gave the bill to ban smoking in casinos its first reading, said the government might let casinos retain smoking rooms if the operators had scientific proof that smoking rooms protected employees and patrons from harm done by tobacco smoke.

At present, smoking is allowed in casinos but is restricted to smoking rooms and VIP gaming areas.

“Some legislators seem very confident about establishing smoking lounges that can scientifically and effectively prevent the health of gaming workers and tourists being from affected by tobacco,” Mr Tam said.
