The government says it has abandoned the proposal to reserve some of Macau’s private housing for residents of the city.

A written statement issued by the Housing Bureau says this is because of irreconcilable differences of opinion on the idea among the public.

The bureau says over 90 per cent of the opinions it collected were in favour of reserved housing but that the city’s associations were mainly against.

The proposal was to keep some private housing for sale only to residents that are ineligible to rent or buy public housing.
