The Macau government is proposing to the central government that the number of mainlanders that visit the city be provisionally limited to 21 million per year, Secretary of Social Affairs and Culture Alexis Tam Chon Weng has said.

“We wish to receive 21 million mainland Chinese tourists and increase the number of international tourists,” Mr Tam told the Legislative Assembly.

He said the aim was to balance the number of visitors from the mainland and the number from elsewhere.

“However, this number is not fixed. After new hotels, the Light Rapid Transit and other infrastructure for public transport are ready, the number of mainland tourists will increase again.”
