The government had a fiscal surplus of MOP124.6 billion (US$15.59 billion) last year, Secretary for the Economy and Finance Francis Tam Pak Yuen has said.

Mr Tam told the Legislative Assembly that revenue amounted to over MOP175.9 billion – MOP47.3 billion more than budgeted, mainly because revenue from taxes on gaming was much greater than forecast.

Spending amounted to MOP51.4 billion, MOP26.6 billion less than budgeted.

The government’s capital spending was just over MOP7 billion, only 39.6 percent of the amount budgeted, mainly because of delays in big infrastructure projects.
