The annual rate of consumer price inflation slowed to 4.76 per cent in July from 4.91 per cent the month before, official data indicate.

The Statistics and Census Service attributes the inflation mainly to higher rents for housing, the higher cost of eating out and the higher cost of out-patient healthcare.

Alcoholic drink and tobacco price inflation was 28.11 per cent because of an increase in tobacco tax, housing and fuel price inflation was 8.72 per cent and healthcare inflation was 5.98 per cent.

In contrast, communication costs fell, deflating at an annual rate of 0.76 per cent.
