The annual rate of consumer price inflation crept up to 4.93 per cent in April from 4.51 per cent the month before, official data indicate.

The Statistics and Census Service attributes the acceleration to higher rents for housing and higher prices of meals in restaurants.

The annual rate of housing and fuel price inflation was 9.93 per cent and the annual rate of food and non-alcoholic drink price inflation was 5.16 per cent.

In contrast, there was annual deflation of alcoholic drink and tobacco prices, which fell by 2.07 per cent.
