The construction industry’s gross value added, or contribution to the economy, rose by 33 percent last year to MOP6.44 billion (US$807 million), buoyed by public works contracts, official data show.

The value of the industry’s public works contracts rose by 116.3 percent to MOP11.71 billion, largely because of a jump of 287.6 percent in the value of public housing contracts to MOP7.57 billion.

The value of private construction projects fell by 1.9 percent to MOP18.81 billion as the value of work on hotels and casino-resorts dropped by 10.6 percent to MOP11.67 billion.

Macau had 1,119 construction enterprises last year, 201 fewer than in 2011, employing 21,309 workers, 1,261 more.
