Casino pay increase of 5 pct sets wage benchmark

Wages could increase by between 5 percent and 10 percent this year, pushed up by a shortage of workers, our sister publication Business Daily reports.

Last week’s 5 percent increase by casino operator Sociedade de Jogos de Macau SA was a benchmark for other industries, said MSS Recruitment Ltd managing director Jiji Tu.

Recruitment agencies told the newspaper that low unemployment and demand for staff would make it harder for small and medium enterprises to keep their employees.

Macau Small and Medium Enterprises Association vice-chairman Daniel Iong Ieng said pay increases were almost certain.

A survey commissioned by the association last year found that 90 percent of SMEs would start making losses if labour costs rose by 20 percent.
