BRIEFS: Package tour visitors increase 23 pct in April

Tourists in package tours increased by 23 percent year-on-year last April, reaching 957,000, according to data released yesterday by the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC). Such an increase has been attributed to the long Easter Break, DSEC indicated in a statement.  Figures show that visitors from mainland China totaled 771,000, an increase of 31 percent. 244,000 came from the neighboring province of Guangdong. Visitors from Taiwan (58,000), Hong Kong (37,000) and Japan (10,000) also increased year-on-year, but the number of visitors coming from the Republic of Korea (32,000) and Thailand (14,000) decreased. 99 hotels and guesthouses were operating by the end of April, providing a total of 28,000 guest rooms, a decrease of 1 percent year-on-year. Moreover, five-star hotels accounted for 66 percent of the total supply, providing 18,000 guest rooms. Guests staying in five-star hotels accounted for 58 percent of the total number.
