Beijing official promises backing for Macau growth

A senior official of the central government has said it will continue to support economic growth in Macau.

The official Xinhua news agency quotes the minister in charge of the National Development and Reform Commission, Xu Shaoshi, as telling a press conference in Beijing that the development of Hengqin Island will bring opportunities for Macau to develop a more diverse economy.

Mr Xu said he hoped the authorities would soon approve the establishment of a free trade zone for Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau.

He said efforts would be made to ensure that the mainland kept Macau supplied with basics such as electricity, natural gas and water.
