The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) has released the figures for visitor arrivals in August. Around 2.8 million people visited Macau last month, a 7.1 percent increase compared to August last year. Of those visitors, half of them were same-day visitors.
The number of visitors from mainland China recorded an even greater rise of 15.1 percent to more than 1.8 million, with 894,403 of them having travelled to Macau under the Individual Visit Scheme. Nearly half of those visitors were from Guangdong and Fujian provinces.
Drops were observed in the visitors coming from three Asian countries and regions. The numbers of tourists from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Indonesia dropped 4.5, 7.2 and 1.7 percent respectively. Nevertheless, visitors from the Republic of Korea saw a 0.7 percent increase to 48,000.
Long-haul visitor figures also showed mixed results. The numbers of Australian and British tourists increased by 1.6 and 0.5 percent respectively. However, the number of visitors from the United States and Canada dropped by 6.1 percent and 8 percent.
There was no change in visitors’ average length of stay compared to last year, which remained at one day. The average stays of overnight and same-day visitors are 1.9  and 0.2 day respectively.
Macau has received a total of 19.5 million visitors so far this year. The figure is 4.7 percent higher than the same period last year. During the first eight months, visitors from mainland China and South Korea have increased by 11.1 percent and 4.7 percent. However, visitors from Hong Kong and Taiwan have both decreased, with the number of visitors from Taiwan dropping as much as 10 percent. There has also been a visible decline in the numbers of visitors from the United States, Australia and Canada. Visitors from the United Kingdom, however, registered a year-on-year increase.
