The government’s budget surplus is on track to top last year’s MOP72.8 billion (US$9.11 billion) surplus by the end of this month.

Financial Services Bureau data show the cumulative surplus at the end of last month was MOP68 billion, one-third more than a year earlier and more that the government’s estimate of MOP41.1 billion for the entire year.

Government revenue in the first eight months grew by 21.1 percent to MOP99.18 billion and spending was MOP31.13 billion, 41.7 percent of figure budgeted for the whole year.

Revenue has been inflated by better-than-forecast takings from gaming.
