Macau population estimated at 591,900

The Statistics and Census Services (DSEC) has revealed a quarter-on-quarter rise in the overall population of Macau. By the end of June, Macau registered a total of 591,900 inhabitants, 5,600 more than in the previous quarter. 51 percent of these inhabitants are female. The number of births has decreased by 5.3 percent – with a total of 1,524 live births. According to DSEC, this means that there were 85 fewer births quarter-on-quarter. During the first quarter of 2013, there were 3,133 live births, 100 fewer than were recorded during the same period last year. The number of foreigners living in Macau has also seen an increase. In the second quarter of 2013, 800 Chinese immigrants arrived, and the inflow of individuals granted right of abode registered a total of 360. Non-resident workers totaled 121,194 at the end of the second quarter, an increase of 6,478 quarter-to-quarter. Moreover, the number of deaths has decreased. There were 442 deaths, 49 fewer when compared to last year. Tumors are the cause of most deaths (156), followed by diseases of the circulatory system (104), and conditions of the respiratory system (63). A total of 1,050 cases of marriage registration were recorded in the second quarter: a decrease of 118 cases quarter-to-quarter. In the first half-year of 2013, there were 2,218 cases of marriage registration, an increase of 236 cases year-on-year.
