Number of non-resident workers goes up

The number of non-resident workers in Macau has been increasing in the first half of the year, reaching a total of 121,194 work permits issued by the end of June. Compared with the end of January, another 9,952 non-resident workers saw their request to work in Macau accepted.  These figures were provided by the Pubic Security Police (PSP) and have been published by the Human Resources Office.

Mainland China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Hong Kong and Indonesia make up the top five non-resident workers’ homelands. 73,969 people with a work permit (commonly known as the “Blue Card”) come from mainland China. From the Philippines and Vietnam, a total of 17,637 and 11,225 “Blue Card” holders are registered. Nepal also has a significant number of citizens working in Macau as non-residents: 2,554.
The majority of these non-resident workers are employed in the restaurant and hotel sector. Domestic workers come next in the list, with 19,124 people working in this sector. The greater number of domestic workers in Macau comes from the Philippines (9,006) followed by Vietnam (6,700), Indonesia (3,151) and Myanmar (102).
Moreover, the construction sector brings 18,081 people to Macau, who generally come from mainland China (16,059) and Hong Kong (1,785). Within wholesale and retail trade area, Macau employs 13,630 non-resident workers. Again, employees from mainland China appear at the top of the list.
Cultural, Recreational Activities and the Lottery is the fifth sector receiving more non-resident workers (11,874), with the majority of employees coming from mainland China (3,080).  Finally, real estate and company services also employ a significant number of non-residents with a total of 10,274 work permits issued to the end of June.
Agriculture, the extractive industry, production and distribution of electricity, gas and water, and well as international organizations are amongst the sectors employing the lowest number of non-residents.
From Europe, non-residents come mainly from the United Kingdom (228). 291 non-resident workers are U.S. nationals. India (288), Japan (189), Australia (204), the Republic of Korea (219), Canada (127) and Singapore (119) also register significant numbers of non-residents working in Macau.
