Trade deficit reaches MOP16.67b in Q1

Macau’s trade deficit for the first quarter of 2013 widened by 8.4 percent, in comparison to the same period last year, to MOP16.67 billion (USD2.09 billion), according to the figures released on Tuesday by the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC). From January to March 2013, the combined value of import and exports of local merchandise amounted to MOP21.35 billion (2. 67 billion dollars). This was up by 12 percent compared with the same period in 2012. The figures indicated that the total value of merchandise exported rose by 18 percent to MOP2.34 billion (292.7 million dollars), while that of import grew by 11 percent to MOP19.01 billion (2.38 billion dollars). An analysis of the destination of exports indicated that compared to last year the value of merchandise exported to Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland increased by 34 percent and 15 percent respectively.
Exports of textiles and garments amounted to MOP212 million (26.52 million dollars), which was down by 26 percent on last year. However, the value of Non-textile exports grew by 26 percent to MOP2.13 billion (266.5 million dollars). Imports from the Chinese mainland and the EU expanded by 16 percent and 17 percent respectively, according to the DSEC.
