Labor authority says 53% seeking jobs are fired workers

According to data recently released by the Labor Affairs Bureau (DSAL), there were 1,955 registered with the Bureau for a job from January to March this year. Fired workers accounted for 53 percent of the total number.
About 30 percent registered with the Bureau with the hope of changing their place of work, according to a release from DSAL.
Job seekers aged between 45 to 59 account for the majority in the first quarter, with 54 percent of the total registered applicants. Those between 25 and 44 comprised of 27 percent of the total.
Half of registered job seekers have graduated from high schools, followed by 34 percent who have graduated from primary school or below. Holders of diplomas or university certificates occupied some 15 percent in total.
Construction workers ranked as the most popular vocation of all registered applicants, with an average expected salary of MOP10,728, according to the Bureau. Security staff, office clerks, cleaners, as well as casino staff follow. Applicants’ average expected salary of the above five positions are all higher than that which employers are willing to pay, data indicates. The expectation gap occurred particularly in the occupations of security staff and office clerks, with disparities of 54 percent and 26 percent, respectively.
Waiters/waitresses, cleaners, salesmen/saleswomen, chefs, and security staff are the top five occupations that are most in demand by registered employers. Employers offer salaries from MOP7,880 to MOP5,540 for different positions. Expectation gaps were also noticeable in salaries set by the applicants and the employers. Salaries anticipated by the latter are all lower than applicants’ wishes. Security staff and chefs are two occupations with expected salary gaps of 35 percent and 34 percent between the job seekers and job hunters.
