The Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) yesterday released information that the number of visitors coming to Macau in March increased slightly by 1.6 percent year on year, reaching more than 2.3 million over the course of the month.
However, half of them (over 1.2 million people) did not spend a night in Macau, official data indicated. The average length of time that visitors stayed in March was one day, with an increase of 0.1 day year on year.
Despite the growth in general visitor numbers, the number of travelers from the mainland, which accounted for more than half of the total, reduced by 1.1 percent. Guangdong and Fujian were the two major provinces from which visitors came.
There were decreases in visitors from Taiwan (0.3 percent), Japan (27.2 percent) and Canada (9.5 percent), according to DSEC.
On the other hand, those from Hong Kong, South Korea and Britain increased by eight to nine percent. There was also a slight increase in numbers of visitors from America and Australia, of 1.3 percent and 0.3 percent, respectively.
Referring to the official data, more than seven million people visited Macau from January to March, representing a small increase of 1.9 percent. Visitors from some Asian countries and regions such as the mainland, Hong Kong, South Korea and Thailand recorded growth year on year in the first quarter. But for some other Asian regions such as Taiwan, Japan and Malaysia together with some western countries such as the U.S.A., Australia and Canada, the first quarter witnessed declines year on year.
