Macau’s Composite Consumer Price Index (CPI) for March this year went up by 6.22 percent compared to the same period last year, according to the figures released yesterday by the city’s Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).
The inflation during March 2013 was caused mainly by the price increases of dining out as well as rising rent rates, the DSEC said. In comparison with March 2012, notable increase was observed in the price index of Housing and Fuels (+8.46 percent) and Health (+ 6.81 percent), which was caused by higher rent for dwellings and higher charges for outpatient services.
Meanwhile, the price index of Education and Communication decreased by 3.13 percent and 2.88 percent respectively year-on-year. As the effect of the Lunar New Year faded out, the Composite CPI for March 2013 decreased by 0.29 percent month-to-month. The average Composite CPI for the first quarter of 2013 increased by 5.38 percent year-on-year. For the 12 months ending in March 2013, the average Composite CPI rose by 5.88 percent from the preceding period.
