Rent control bill given first reading by lawmakers

The Legislative Assembly has given the first reading to the rent control bill.

The bill would limit increases in rents and provide for arbitration of disputes between landlords and tenants.

Some members of the assembly have voiced misgivings about government interference in the market for property to let.

But their reservations were barely reflected in the voting on the first reading, 29 members voting in favour and one abstaining.
