An academic thinks the government of Macau should better promote the city as a place to visit, Business Daily reports.

The newspaper quotes University of Macau hospitality and gaming management programme director Amy So Siu Ian as saying so in response to remarks by a member of Hong Kong’s Legislative Council who represents the tourism industry, Yiu Si-wing.

Mr Yiu said on RTHK, Hong Kong’s public broadcaster, that if fewer mainlanders visited Hong Kong to shop, fewer visited Macau to gamble, because many travelled on tours that took them to both places.

“The government really needs to promote a more diversified set of tourism elements here, and look to diversify its tourist sources,” Ms So commented.

“Apart from mainland Chinese, the government also has to reinforce the city’s tourism promotion to visitors from South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong.”
