The government’s fiscal surplus was MOP27.2 billion (about US$3.4 billion) in the first seven months of this year, 59.1 percent less than in the corresponding period a year earlier, the Financial Services Bureau says.

The bureau attributes the contraction mainly to the decline in revenue from direct taxes on gaming.

Its data show government revenue was MOP64.5 billion, or 32.5 percent less than a year earlier, and that government spending was MOP37.3 billion, or 27.9 percent more.
