Jewellery shop chains report big dips in Q1 sales

The same-store sales of two chains of jewellers in Macau and Hong Kong were lower in the first quarter of this year than a year earlier.

The operator of the Chow Tai Fook chain told the Hong Kong Stock Exchange that its same-store sales in the two cities and other markets had decreased by 26 per cent, falling for the second quarter in a row, but failed to give a value for its sales.

The operator of the Luk Fook chain told the exchange that its same-store sales had decreased by 22 per cent, but similarly failed to give a value.

Both said high-spending mainlanders were buying their jewellery further afield.
