The government must increase the pay of health workers to attract recruits, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Alexis Tam Chon Weng has said.
“We have to improve the salaries of medical staff in order to attract people in this sector to Macau,” Mr Tam said.
“At the current salary level we will not be able to attract Cantonese-speaking medical staff from Hong Kong or mainland China,” he said.
“This year we are aiming to hire 529 workers for the health system. The money is available.”
Macau had 1,514 doctors and 1,854 nurses in 2013, official data show.
