The increase to the security forces additional pay will be implemented during the first half of this year, secretary for Security, Cheong Kuoc V, announced on Friday.
Cheong first announced the increase in November at the Legislative Assembly, during his 2012 Policy Address, in response to lawmakers concerns over the police forces working conditions.
But last week he pledged to introduce the raise by June, adding that all military personnel will benefit from this increase. However, the secretary did not disclose how significant the increase would be. He merely said that the Executive Council must first study the proposal.
The main goals of this policy are to encourage the more experienced staff to stay instead of retiring after the required 36 years of duty, as well as to draw new blood into the security forces.
I hope to attract more young people with good training and discipline to serve in the security forces and to serve the society, the secretary said, quoted by TDM.
The current bonus was implemented in 2005, accounting for 50 percent of the 100-point salary index (a total of MOP 3,000 per month).
Staff from the public security forces, the Customs Services, the Macau prison and the Fire Services are entitled to this additional payment every month, except if they miss work, enjoy annual leave or are absent due to disciplinary action.
The payment was created to compensate officers for the disruptive nature of their working patterns which may also occasionally include dangerous conditions.
Cheong was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a graduation ceremony of new officers. A total of 115 graduates will join the Public Security Police and to the Fire Services.
