MOST GUESTS PREFER 5-STAR HOTELS

Over half a million overnighters decided to patronise a 5-star hotel resort during July. The average hotel occupancy rate for the month was 87.3 percent, with the majority of visitors hailing from Mainland China.

The largest proportion of hotel guests that visited Macau stayed for the night in a 5-star hotel, data from the Statistics and Census Service Bureau (DSEC) reveals. During the month of July, some 939,000 guests checked into hotels and guesthouses, of which 59 percent (an increase of 3.7 percent points or around 554,000) stayed in 5-star hotels.
In July, hotels posted an average occupancy rate of 87.3 percent, an increase of 2.4 percent points, while guesthouses recorded an occupancy rate of 62. 4 percent. By the end of July there were 99 hotels and guesthouses operating in Macau, providing 28,000 rooms (a 1 percent increase over that of a year ago). Of these rooms, 66 percent or around 18,000, were supplied by 5-star hotels.
With regard to hotel clients, 65 percent were from Mainland China, 12 percent from Hong Kong, 4 percent from Taiwan, 2 percent from South Korea and 17 percent from other countries.
The 939,000 guests represent a three percent year-on-year increase. As for the first seven months of the year, the increase was slightly less at only two percent for an overall total of 6.2 million hotel guests.
In the first seven months of 2014, visitor-guests accounted for 70 percent of total overnight visitors, down one percentage point year-on-year.
Also in July, visitor arrivals on package tours increased 35 percent year-on-year to 1.158 million. Of these, 946,000 were visitors travelling on package tours from Mainland China, which was a jump of 39 percent year-on-year. Visitors from Taiwan (75,000) and Japan (12,000) increased by 28 percent and 23 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, visitors from Hong Kong (34,000) and Thailand (12,000) decreased by 5 percent and 22 percent, respectively.
