To account for the future establishment of new medical and health facilities in Macau, the Health Bureau (SSM) has announced the intention to recruit 349 new staff members this year.
As of the end of April this year, the bureau employed 3,155 personnel. Currently, SSM is working to recruit medical staff, and 232 out of the expected 349 have completed or were involved in the recruitment procedures that ended in May. About 50 percent of them are nurses.
The hiring quota includes doctors, nurses, pharmacists and technicians.
Lei Chin Ion, head of the Bureau, stated that before the amendment to the scheme for intern doctors takes effect, the authority has decided to continue with the current beginning level clinical course as the preliminary course for medical graduates in Macau. Attendants can also take the one-year advanced level course afterwards.
As for training for medical specialists, Lei said that the training period has been set at six years. In addition, the bureau plans to gain 40 more medical specialist trainees by the end of the year.
The bureau met representatives from the People’s Alliance for the Development of Macau (API) this week. Head of the Alliance Chan Tak Seng pointed out that the greatest demand for medical human resources will come from the city, as more medical facilities will be built. Lawmaker Song Pek Kei, Vice Head of API, recognized the current parallel medical system operating between specialty clinics and health centers, but she suggested that the latter could provide more services to further relieve the current burden of specialty clinics.
