In April 2014, Macau International Airport (MIA) handled 450,000 passengers and 4,300 flight movements, representing a year-on-year growth of 10 and 11 percent respectively. During the four-day Easter holiday, MIA handled a daily average of 17,490 passengers, and over 600 flight movements, recording respective increases of 14 percent and 10 percent compared with the Easter holiday last year.
According to a press release issued by MIA, passenger traffic volume and flight movements recorded sharp increases during the Easter holiday. The increase was mainly driven by the high number of local residents travelling outbound during the seasonal festivals, and by a significant growth in the number of tourists from mainland China and Taiwan who chose to visit Macau.
The Southeast Asia market accounted for a slight increase of three percent, which is mainly attributed to “political factors.”
On April 28, Skywing Airlines launched a charter flight service from Siem Reap, Cambodia, to Macau; a total of 21 airlines now operate 38 routes involving MIA. According to MIA, “the stable growth in the passenger market reflects the optimistic attitude of airlines towards the current aviation market.”
Separately, Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council has said that the Taiwan and Macau Aviation Transportation Agreement, which was signed in February this year, might not be delivered to the Taiwanese Legislative Yuan within its current session. This means that a number of airlines, having already registered their interest in providing budget flight services between Taiwan and Macau, will have to wait.
