Consumer confidence waned in the first quarter of this year, the index dipping by 2.2 points from 12 months ago.

The reading of the Macau University of Science and Technology’s confidence index was 85.99 points out of 200 in the first quarter – indicating consumers were “not confident enough”.

A score below 100 points suggests a negative outlook in consumer confidence, the university said.

The sub-index tracking the intention to buy a home was the weakest of the six that comprise the overall index.

The sub-index of home purchase posted 40.38 points for the first quarter of this year, down 3.1 percent on the previous quarter.

The sub-indexes of confidence in employment, prices and living standards were higher than a year earlier.

To compile the survey, the university telephoned 1,024 residents from March 15 to 22 and asked them for their perspectives on the city’s economy, employment status, price level, quality of life, home purchase and share purchase.
