Figures recently released by the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) show that the Consumer Price Index for February 2014 rose by 5.65 percent year-on-year –mainly attributed to higher charges on restaurant tariffs, the rising cost of rent and an increase in the prices of vegetables. When compared to February 2013, other relevant increases were recorded, specifically in the price index of housing & fuels (more than 12.28 percent), household goods & furnishings (more than 6.92 percent), food & non-alcoholic beverages (6.75 percent) on account of higher rentals, dearer prices of vegetables as well as rising charges for eating out and domestic services. On the contrary, the Recreation & Culture price index decreased by 2.73 percent upon reduced charges for package tours following the Lunar New Year. Figures also show that the Consumer Price Index for February increased by 0.37 percent month-on-month. The price indexes of housing & fuels and food & non-alcoholic beverages increased by 1.39 and 1.38 percent respectively.
